PERENNIAL heavyweight contender Tony Thompson remains in the hunt for a third world title shot after notching an upset, but deserved split decision victory over Odlanier Solis, 33, on Saturday in Tekirdag, Turkey. Thompson, who has lost twice to division leader Wladimir Klitschko, who won by scores of 115-113, 115-114, 112-116, against the talented but unwilling Cuban.

The 42-year-old from Maryland was coming off a decision loss to top contender Kubrat Pulev last August after scoring back-to-back stoppages of British prospect David Price. This victory puts him in line for a possible WBC title shot – a belt that is currently vacant.

Much was expected of Solis when he turned professional on the back of a glistening amateur career but this latest disappointment leaves him with few options. He had won three since a farcical one-round loss to Vitali Klitschko but never really looked like making it four against the veteran southpaw.

Solis struggled to get inside Thompson’s long arms, and seemed to lack the desire – bar a late rounds rally – to do what was necessary to win.
