BOXING RESULTS: Power-punching Manny Pacquiao dominates Chris Algieri in Macau

MANNY PACQUIAO scored an emphatic victory over New York’s Chris Algieri, the challenger for the Filipino’s WBO welterweight title at the Cotai Arena in Macau.
The champion stamped his authority on the contest from the very first round. Faster than the callow American had expected, Pacquiao was on him, tracking him across the canvas and tagging him with heavy, repeated lefts.
The wheels soon spun off the Algieri operation. As soon as the second round, under pressure, his feet slipped from beneath him. That was the first knockdown scored against him. It was the first of six.
The New Yorker cycled back. He did dart out jabs but too infrequently. Occasionally he snuck a right over but all the momentum was with Pacquiao. Manny hammered him with his left hands, blasting following rights after.
The roar of the crowd swelled behind Pacquiao in the fifth and Algieri barely escaped the round. With Algieri willowly on his feet, the champion bowled him over easily. But Pacquiao hurt him badly in the ninth round with a left that deposited Algieri on the canvas.
Miles behind on the scorecards, it became apparent that the New Yorker was only interested in survival. Which he achieved. He reeled clear of Pacquiao and made it through to the last bell.
“I came to fight,” Pacquiao said. “We started training camp several weeks earlier. We worked on the heavy bag. More than we have in many, many year. Algieri was fast moving and no I was not surprised he kept getting up because that’s what he did against Ruslan Provodnikov. He has a big heart.”
