Ganryujima: Results!

Monday, 2 March 2015  |  Carl

Last night in Japan something we expect only in movies went down, the event was called Ganryujima and the idea is basically exactly like the Kumite in Bloodsport. It was a 1 night, 8 man tournament with each competitor having a different fighting style. They had a Capoeira guy, a Dutch Kickboxer, a Senegalese wrestler, a Sumo, and so on, I mean you get the idea all styles and. Of course the Dutch Kickboxer Brian Douwes Knocked out all 3 opponents in the first round of each match, what else would we expect right?

Here is a picture of the weigh ins just to give an idea.

While we were promised a circular ring with no ropes and a MOAT... yes a body of water surrounding the ring where if you get pushed in 3 times in a round you lose. The pictures showed it was more like blue mats around the ring instead of the moat this time which disappointed  a little but the same rules applied about being pushed out of the ring, the rest of the rules were basically the same as most MMA fights.

I really was curious about this and was actually pretty upset that there was no way to watch this online even though I was sure Douwes would win (I may be a little bias). It would have been nice to see how the event worked out, lets keep our fingers crossed that we can watch the next one if it ever happens. No matter how silly and crazy it sounds, I feel it will still bring out the curiosity in everyone that enjoys Martial Arts and combat sports.

The new and unusual promotion has announced the brackets for the 8-man tournament under somewhat grappling-unfriendly rules.

The competition area will be 8-meter diameter and 60 cm high circle stage with no ropes or cage, with a possible moat of water surrounding it. There will be 3 rounds of 3 minutes each, with 1 round extension, 1 minute between each round. However, the time and number of rounds may be changed if both sides agree.

Competition clothing will be provided as a sleeveless top and two trousers to choose from. Supporting gear will be determined or approved by officials. MMA gloves will be used.

A fighter can win by KO, TKO, opponent’s submission, or three judge decision. Additionally, a win can come by TKO fall, if one opponent falls off the stage 3 times in one round. In scoring, a fighter loses points for receiving damage or falling/being thrown and subsequently off the stage.

Techniques not allowed include the usual, plus no head kicks or stomps to a grounded opponent, and no chokes to a grounded opponent. Allowed strikes include the usual, plus elbows and head butts. Standing grappling is allowed but will be a break when it takes place on the ground.
