N the co-feature on the Kell Brook-Errol Spence show at Bramall Lane stadium in Sheffield, Hammersmith’s George Groves finally achieved his dream of becoming a world super-middleweight champion. The Londoner picked up the vacant WBA title against tough Russian Fedor Chudinov, who had previously held the belt last year.

In his fourth attempt at grabbing global glory, Groves stopped his robust and relentlessly aggressive opponent in the sixth round. A punishing salvo of hooks to head and body crashed in from George, and with nothing coming back from Chudinov, the referee stepped in to call a halt to proceedings at 1-14.

The relief and joy was etched on Groves’ face at the end of the bout, and even his old rival, Carl Froch, stood up and applauded from ringside.

Groves’ victory raises the possibility of a mouth-watering unification clash with bitter enemy and IBF 168lb king James DeGale, whom George outpointed back in 2011.
